SAT 1/20 -- FOSSILS meeting update - 2007/01/17 16:24
Check out what is going on with FOSSILS this month. We have made their newsletter in two different sections; Get Pungent & Funky with FOSSILS on January 20 under January Guests and News & Notes from FOSSILS President Beth Howard. Mention is also made of the 2008 National Convention. Great opportunity this weekend to possibly recruit help from this Indiana group. Hopefully somebody on the 2008 committee is planning to attend on Saturday and can give an update.
Read below and get an idea of what to expect on Saturday with a meeting title of "Get Pungent & Funky"
Looking forward to seeing all of you who can make it on Saturday. Come for all or part of the day. ---- Sue & Ken

ON TAP IN THIS ISSUE Holiday Party Recap ~ January Meeting News ? It?s Pungent & Funky Time Pay Thy Dues ~ News & Notes from FOSSILS President ~ 2008 AHA Convention Update Upcoming Meetings
Holiday Party Recap If you weren?t there, you missed a good one1 The FOSSILS 2006 Holiday Party, held on December 16 in the Prost! Room at RichO?s, gave members and friends a terrific night to remember. Nearly 90 guests enjoyed fabulous food, an amazing selection of homebrews on tap and one of the most incredible raffles in years.
Interestingly enough, the party was even fiscally responsible, as the $15 cover charge and raffle collections kept overall expenses under $100. It was a worthwhile experiment in trying something completely different from our customary party operations. Not bad?not bad at all.
Thanks to all making this a celebration to remember!
Get Pungent & Funky with FOSSILS on January 20 Remember, this marks our switch to a Saturday meeting schedule in 2007.
Date: Saturday, January 20 Time: 6:30 p.m. ~ Gathering and homebrew sharing (and contest check-in, see below) 7:15 p.m. ~ Meeting and announcements Location: Prost! Room at RichO?s Public House
Pungent & Funky Trek into the culinary abyss with the ever-creative and courageous members of FOSSILS as we bravely voyage beyond customary hors d'oeuvres... far, far beyond the world of mozzarella sticks and potato skins. Entries should embody the spirit of pungency and funkiness in which this contest was fashioned by the founding members of FOSSILS nearly 15 years ago, yet be edible (by most, anyway). Interesting presentation may net additional points.
Awards will be presented in four categories: Most Pungent Funkiest Brew Food (pungent, funky & beer as an integral ingredient) Best of Show
This year's panel of guest judges includes Courier-Journal Food Editor Sarah Fritchner, Capriole Farms owner Judy Schadd, resident food expert Maggie Oster and 2006 P&F winner Bob Capshew. Judging will begin promptly at 7 p.m., so please sign in with your entry/entries before then.
This marks my final year as the contest organizer for the Pungent & Funky contest. Check in with me to learn the ropes or if you have questions about the Pungent & Funky contest. Beth Howard at beersnobs@msn.com or (502)541-1984.
January Guests Members from two Cincinnati-area homebrew clubs will be in town visiting local breweries on Saturday and they have been invited to join our FOSSILS meeting. It will be a great opportunity to share news of brewing competitions and festivals as well as quality watering holes and shopping stops in our respective communities.
Pay Thy Dues, FOSSILS FOSSILS membership dues are payable in January by cash or check. Check with Treasurer Denny Stepp at January?s meeting. As a reminder, FOSSILS dues are $18 per year (a true bargain) and include sampling privileges at meetings, member-priced premium items and voting rights. Dues are structured thusly: ?Family? membership = dual membership for a couple consisting of wife/husband/significant other. Both designated adults are considered to be active members for the purpose of voting and other member benefits. ?Individual? membership = single membership with the privilege of bringing a guest to meetings. The dues-paying individual only is considered to be an active member for the purpose of voting in elections and other member benefits (sale-priced t-shirts, for example).
News & Notes from FOSSILS President Beth Howard S-A-TUR-DAY NIGHT! S-A-TUR-DAY NIGHT! January marks the beginning a historic era in FOSSILS history?the move to holding membership meetings on Saturday nights rather than Sundays. A radical move? Perhaps not. A good move for FOSSILS and the RichO?s/Sportstime crew? Most definitely. The move to Saturdays offers countless benefits to both our club and to Roger and the RichO?s team. I foresee FOSSILS being able to engage members in new ways and most likely increase our reach into the homebrewing and beer appreciation community. A perfect example of that will be as we are able to welcome and host members of two Cinci-area clubs at our meeting this month?something not generally possible with our Sunday meetings. Most important, Roger will no longer have to sacrifice a day off to open the shop (or worry about who will be available to do so), keep up with us and clean up after we leave. Of course, we?ll be watching for trends in attendance and interest and will need to be nimble with our schedule as we work through this first year. In the end, however, I anticipate this to be a mutually beneficial and profitable venture for all involved. Let me know what you think as we move through 2007.
Guest Speakers for Meetings Another benefit of our move to Saturday meeting is that we may be better able to secure guest speakers from regional breweries. The Executive/Planning Committee has a running list of available dates and potential guests. If/when you make contacts in your beer-loving travels, please pass them along to us.
FOSSILS Membership Survey Watch your e-mail in late January for the first annual FOSSILS Membership Survey. It will only take a few moments to complete, but the information and insight we gain will be priceless. The data collected will help us in making programming decisions, developing brewing education opportunities and much more. Thanks in advance for participating.
AHA Convention Coming to Region in 2008 Speaking of Cincinnati, the American Homebrewers Association has selected Cinci as the home of their 2008 National Convention (*see note about Bourbon Barrel Beer below?it?s definitely something we can participate and help with). A preliminary committee organization session was held last Saturday, but I wasn?t notified in time enough to attend. I?m back in the loop, however, and have indicated FOSSILS? willingness to participate and be of assistance.
It appears that they are seeking additional committee members representative of our region. I believe it would be in the best interest of FOSSILS to have representation and participation on that committee as well as an active role as possible in the execution of the convention?this is a fabulous opportunity. I will bring information to the next FOSSILS meeting.
As I gain more information, I?ll keep you posted. If you are interested in taking an active role in the process, please let me know. Otherwise, I?m going to draft you.
Not Dog Changes Over the next few editions, you will notice some experimental changes and updates to the look and content of the Not Dog. Please bear with me as I try new formats, articles and styles. I?d like to run articles, editorials and commentary from our members as well as include links to various blogs, websites, etc. of interest. Let me know what you have to contribute and/or think would be of most relevance and value.
That?s all for now. I?ll be armed with Pepcid and Rolaids for Saturday?s Pungent & Funky Appetizer Competition!
Cheers, Beth Fossils.editor@gmail.com
*AHA 2008 News From Ken Ewing All Bourbon Barrel Beer Lovers (LAGERS, CMI, SODZ, DRAFT, FOSSILS, BBL) ? Each club that is interested in participating in brewing a Bourbon Barrel Beer for the AHA 2008 Zinzinnati convention should select someone to be their club contact. ?
