Hopback - 2008/02/02 02:19 Thanks to Dave Harsh for all the advise. This new brewers has many questions. Hopefully some others will share thoughts also.

Hopback -- Next recipe calls for use of a hopback. Have researched on line and now understand the concept. Realize is is not necessary but sounds like a good idea.

Question --- Will I get the same effect from a hopback using pellet versus leaf hop? I have only read articles relating to the use of hopback with leaf hops. Anybody use a hopback with pellet hops? Figure I might have to add a strainer of some type to my tubing going into the carboy if use pellet.

Thoughts anyone? Sue Bertke

I've never used a hopback, but you generally get higher yield out of pellets than you do from leaf. You will have to account for possible clogging if you use pellets - I have that issue with my false bottom when I use pellets without hop bags.

As far as a strainer goes, if you have a good screen leaving your hop back, you should be fine. I've never worried about little hop bits getting into the carboy as they settle out at the end of fermentation anyway. Arthur: What's so bad about being drunk?
